AGA to Implement Descartes’ Routing and Scheduling Solution to Increase Customer Service and Efficiency Worldwide

ORLANDO, FL, October 1, 1998 – The Descartes Systems Group Inc. (TSE: DSG), a leading provider of supply chain execution software for delivery-sensitive organizations, today announced that AGA AB, the Sweden-based industrial and medical gas company, has selected Descartes Energy™ Roadshow for its dynamic routing and scheduling needs. The worldwide agreement, worth potentially $1.9 million (CAD), will begin implementation immediately in 10 sites in Europe and the United States with additional sites to follow.

The global deployment will enable AGA to automate its gas delivery, thus improving customer service and delivery performance. Local distribution managers and fleet dispatchers will use the system to increase driver productivity and reduce distribution costs by decreasing kilometers traveled and employee overtime, balancing workloads among drivers and increasing vehicle utilization.

“We needed a system that would provide an efficient and secure manner by which to deliver gas,” said Kenneth Friberg, vice president of cylinder logistics, AGA. “AGA has more than 1 million customers in what is a highly differentiated marketplace, and we are constantly developing new gas applications. Descartes’ system allows us to manage these complexities so we can continue to provide quality customer service while enhancing productivity.

Since implementing the software on a pilot level in its France and United States sites, AGA has reduced mileage for deliveries by an average of 7% compared with its manually controlled scheduling operations.

Chris van der Harst, managing director of Descartes EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), stated that once the system is fully implemented and AGA is taking full advantage of the software’s customization features, the results are expected to be even greater.

“AGA is one of the largest and most respected names in industrial and medical gas industry, and we are honored to play an essential role in its operations,” said Peter Schwartz, chairman and CEO, Descartes. “This agreement confirms our leadership role in providing end-to-end routing and scheduling solutions for companies with worldwide distribution requirements.”

Energy Roadshow is a key component of Energy, Descartes’ integrated supply chain execution software suite. Energy Roadshow, in use worldwide among private fleets and professional carriers, displays least-cost routes on full color detailed map images. Solutions are determined using a sophisticated routing algorithm and are based upon actual travel times and distances, together with detailed information about the true cost of any given route.

The Descartes Systems Group Inc. (www.descartes.com) is a leading provider of Intelligent Execution™ solutions for delivery sensitive organizations. With more than 1,000 customers in 48 countries, Descartes’ solutions are particularly well suited to improving efficiencies where demand-driven consumer, process and transportation industries are characterized by short time-to-plan horizons. These companies are forced to respond to changes in demand, often day-to-day or even minute-to-minute, along with the complexities of short product shelf life, price and promotions volatility, high order volumes and real-time vehicle routing.

AGA AB, one of the world’s leading gas companies, produces and sells industrial and specialty gases in some 40 countries in Europe, the United States and Latin America. These operations employ over 10,000 people. The Gasaccumulator Company, later to be called AGA, was founded in 1904. AGA has approximately 38,000 shareholders.
